Volunteer Policies and Procedures

LVT volunteers serve as tutors or assist with the management of our program. Tutors teach English Language Acquisition for Adults (ELAA)* and basic literacy skills (Adult Basic Education or ABE) needed to participate fully in our complex society. LVT also teaches pre-G.E.D. preparation and citizenship studies. In all that LVT teaches, LVT helps adults identify goals and assists them in improving their listening, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension skills in English. Tutors give three to six hours per week in preparation and teaching time. LVT teaches small groups of students in ELAA, uses team teaching on occasion, and tutors one-to-one in ABE.

Volunteer/Student Protection

Protecting your health, safety, and welfare as well as those of our staff and adult learners is very important to us. If you have any suggestions in these areas, please let us know. At LVT we expect you, as a tutor, to act responsibly in all matters where your health, actions, and comments may affect you or others. You are responsible for notifying the LVT staff and/or Board of Directors if there is potential for compromising the well-being of anyone associated with LVT.

PLEASE NOTE: All tutoring takes place in public places that are well-lighted and safe, such as a library, school, church, community center or coffee shop. FOR LIABILITY REASONS LVT TUTORS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED FROM MEETING IN PRIVATE HOMES FOR TUTORING.

Confidentialty

Confidentiality with regard to a learner's identity and personal information is essential.

Non-Harassment Policy

Harassment, including sexual harassment, is illegal. LVT believes employees, volunteers and adult learners have the right to work in an environment free of harassment and intimidation. LVT prohibits harassment of its employees, volunteers and adult learners in any form.

It is against LVT policy for any volunteer/employee/student to harass another by: making unwelcome sexual advances; engaging in verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature; using an employee’s submission to – or rejection of – such advances or conduct as the basis for, or as a factor in, any employment decision; or, by otherwise creating a hostile, intimidating or offensive working environment. Harassment based on any of the protected characteristics as described in the Equal Employment Opportunity Policy section above is also against LVT policy.

Allegations of harassment will be promptly and thoroughly investigated and, if warranted, appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal, will be taken.

LVT employees and volunteers are discouraged from dating adult learners.

Our policies and procedures are designed to reduce risks to volunteers, learners and LVT, and to further our objective of serving adults at the lowest levels of literacy in the Tucson community.
