Volunteer Qualifications

To tutor, you must be:

• at least 18 years old
• a high school graduate
• sensitive to issues of literacy, the adult learner and other cultures. This will be discussed during training.
• dependable, patient, friendly, optimistic
• respectful of the student and his/her confidentiality
• interested in others
• able to communicate with compassion
• willing to travel to a tutoring site or center. A list of current centers can be found here.
• able to make a commitment of at least one year (for Basic Literacy).

In addition, you need good English skills.

You do not need to know a second language.

A sense of humor and enthusiasm will make your tutoring experience more enjoyable.
